Hellscape

Jungle Love Festival, 2021

'Hellscape' is a stage design collaboration between Alec Palmer and Blair Foley, pre-fabricated in Brisbane and constructed on-site in Borumba Deer Park, Imbil.

The brief was to create a structure and facade that would house the electronic acts performing at Jungle Love Festival.  Inspired by the 1929 short film "Hell's Bells" by Ub Iwerks and various "Betty Boop" era black and white animations, we proposed an illustrated facade featuring a hedonistic disco hell-scape with hidden details throughout the image for audiences to discover. We worked with a local projectionist to map colourful visuals across the negative space of the design and bring the artwork to life at night.

With sustainability being a core part of the Festival's ethos, part of the brief was to avoid plastics and use as few 'new' materials as possible. With this in mind, we created the facade by printing onto large-format recycled plywood panels which were CNC routed to cut out the design. The entire structure was built using reclaimed steel scaffolding, with the facade being fixed in sections to recycled timber off-cuts.
